How
to choose the right club for you.
Visit
the club! If a club you may be interested in
joining is willing to provide you with detailed
membership pricing information over the phone
without meeting you, they are doing you a
disservice. Why? Through your own
observations, and by questioning your membership
guide and current members, you’ll be able to
determine if the club will be able to meet your
fitness, social, and safety needs.
Use
the following checklist to assist you in making an
educated decision:
-
Are staff members
friendly and helpful?
-
Is the club clean
and well-maintained?
-
Do staff members
have appropriate educational backgrounds and/or
certifications from nationally recognized
certifying agencies?
-
Are new members
provided with a club orientation and instruction
on how to use equipment?
-
Does the club have
the cardiovascular resistance equipment you want
and need to achieve your fitness goals?
-
Does the club offer
a sufficient number and variety of programs for
you to achieve your fitness goals (personal
training, group exercise, racquet sports,
cycling, etc.)?
-
Does the club offer
instruction in a sport or activity that you
might want to learn (tennis, squash, etc.)?
-
Does the club offer
a sufficient number and variety of programs for
you to achieve other goals (nutrition, weight
management, social activities, etc.)?
-
Are there long
lines at the equipment, crowded group exercise
classes, or congested locker rooms at the time
that you would normally be using the club?
-
Is child care
available if you need it? If so, will
your children be engaged by qualified,
responsible child care staff? Arcade
games don't care for children -people do.
-
Is there adequate
parking available if you need it? Clubs
that are in malls or plazas cannot control the
parking needs of other businesses in the mall or
new businesses that may move in.
-
Does the club have
automated external defibrillators (AED's) and
on-duty staff members certified in Heartsaver
CPR, First-Aid, Pediatric First-Aid, and
Pediatric CPR at all times? Soon to be
legally required in all fitness clubs, AED's
offer the best chances of surviving sudden
cardiac arrest (SCA).*
*Many fitness
clubs do not have on-duty staff certified in
these life saving skills and surprisingly, most
24-hour fitness clubs do not have
any staff on duty during their overnight
hours! If a fitness club you're
considering cannot answer "YES" to question #12,
cross them off your list! The health,
safety, and welfare of you and your loved ones
is too important to lose.
So, please check out
