July's Mixed-Up Doubles
Becomes A "Rain-Out" Party! The
weather's error ushered in a new era on Friday July
11th and it wasn't such a bad thing! Over 40
members participated in our "First Free Friday
Festivus" and the weather did not dampen the spirits
of those ready to play tennis. The Summer
rainy season brought us one of the most spectacular
thunder and lightning storms of the year.
Instead of the scheduled tennis round-robin, members
and guests participated in an evening
socializing with new members, old friends, and
plenty of food and drink to share.
Our all
new format will return in August and is open to all members
and guests*.
You supply the
"pot-luck" and we'll supply an evening of fun. Please
sign-up with the front desk and let them know what you'll be
contributing to the "pot-luck" (appetizer, entree, dessert,
paper products, etc.). Beverages will be available at the
Mid-Cape Smoothie Bar.
Tennis players must
sign up in advance to allow us to determine the ability groups.
Tennis will be limited to the first 40 players.
Remember, you do
not have to play tennis to participate in this evening of fun.

USTA
Rookies Classic Tournament
Review
We are so
pleased to have hosted our first
USTA sanctioned tennis event for boys and girls ages 10 - 16.
These future all-stars have the makings of becoming the state's most elite
players. This
tournament offered many kids the opportunity to
play in their first official tournament and introduce
them to the rules, the competition, and the
friendships that the sport of tennis embodies.
This event
also gave parents, guests, and many of our own
members a chance to see how well the Mid-Cape
Juniors have been coached by our Head
Pro, Fran Coryell.
Twenty-four trophies were awarded to champions,
finalists, and consolation winners, but all of
the participants were winners this weekend.
T-shirts, pizza parties, and free Father's Day
beers were another highlight to this extremely
successful event.
On Saturday
June 7th, Head Tennis Professional Fran
Coryell held a free "mini-tennis" tournament
for many of the junior students at the
Mid-Cape Racquet & Health Club. Fran's
students took over the courts as their
parents sat in the viewing areas to enjoy
the matches.
Teams played
the best of 5 games and then moved to a new
court. After each match, the players
were then paired up with a new partner, so
that everyone got to play with someone new.
Four matches were played by everyone as
their parents got to watch several long
rallies in each match.
Fran noted
that "The players were able to demonstrate
the skills taught in the lessons leading up
to the tournament. Everyone was turning,
taking the racquet back, and swinging low to
high. Hopefully, events like this will
keep the kids interested in tennis and they
will keep coming back to the game."
Helping out
with the event were other students who were
gracious enough to volunteer their time:
Tara, Taylor, Shayna, and Kayla.

Mid-Cape's Tennis Director Inducted into USTA Hall of Fame
The USTA Board of Directors recently inducted
our
Tennis Director, Jack Dunmead, into the USTA New
England Hall of Fame. The ceremonies were
held Saturday, June 9th, 2007 at the International
Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, RI.
Jack, who now resides in Ft. Myers, may be best remembered for his 12
match winning streak in 45’s tournaments back in 1992. A physical
education teacher at Brockton High School in Brockton, MA, Jack also
coached the tennis team for 13 years. In 2004, he retired from
Dedham Health and Fitness where he served as the Director of Tennis for
21 years. In 1994, Jack won the prestigious USPTA Joseph Deitz
award as "Professional of the Year".
Our
Tennis Ball Machine
Check it out! A
partner that never gets tired or complains about anything. Just
give it some electricity and it will go and go. We have two options
for you to try: Reserve the ball machine for one hour or rent the
machine for monthly unlimited use.
When you call to
reserve the machine and court, please tell the front desk that you
will be using the machine to ensure that it is available. We are
asking you to make sure that you pick up all of the tennis balls and
move the machine off of the courts. Your help in this will be
appreciated.
The ball machine is a
great tool to groove your strokes, work on your fitness, or relieve
some stress for the day. Take some lessons from
the pros and then work on what you have learned on the ball
machine. Good technique will be rewarded with extra work on the
ball machine.
In-House Racquet
Stringing
Our
new Gamma stringing machine is already
working overtime in our continually expanding pro shop. We carry
numerous name brand strings from Wilson, Head, Gamma, and Prince.
The correct tension and new strings will make a big difference to
help you improve your tennis game. A good rule of thumb, is that
you should at least have your racquet restrung twice per year.
Complimentary Tennis
Ratings
If you don't know
where you belong or where to start, then schedule a complimentary
rating with one of our certified tennis professionals. They can then recommend
groups for you to play, or a specific lesson group to be in.
Post your name, rating, and availability on our Partner Matching
Board...then make a match!
Remember,
private lessons are a great way to address your individual
needs.
