The organization known today as the United States Tennis Association (USTA)
originated in 1881 with a small group of tennis club members as the first
national governing body for tennis. The organization was created to
standardize tennis rules and regulations and to encourage and develop the
sport.
The
USTA is composed of 17 geographical sections. Most sections are further
divided into districts. Every section maintains its own staff to administer
USTA programs, establishes its own tournament schedule and issues its own
rankings.
The Florida section has four (4) regions and nineteen (19) districts.
Southwest Florida is Region three (III), and District 13 encompasses the
counties of Charlotte, Lee, Glades, and Hendry.
A USTA
Community Tennis Association (CTA) is "any incorporated, geographically
defined, not-for-profit, volunteer-based tennis organization that supports or
provides programs which promote and develop the growth of tennis."
